The purpose of the Ferndale School District Citizens for Better Education (CBE) is to identify and actively support school board candidates of the Ferndale Public Schools.
Because School Board members are ultimately responsible for the philosophical leadership of the school district through policy setting, approving budget, and hiring and guiding the superintendent, the purpose of CBE is to identify and support those candidates whose beliefs are that the Ferndale District Schools will provide an equal and excellent education for all its students while moving forward in a fiscally responsible manner.
CBE has no party affiliation, is not allied with any state or national organization, and is neither an apologist for the School Board, nor Teacher`s Association`s positions.
CBE is the Election Arm of CBS (Citizens for Better Schools) which was founded over 30 years ago.

When Ferndale High School closed several days in the fall of 1970 because of racial disturbances, a group of parents, students and teachers came together to try to understand the problem and potential solutions. That group—which began with 18 concerned people—soon organized with officers and by-laws so that the efforts of the group would be on-going rather than short-lived.
Members of CBS began to attend Board of Education meetings regularly. They addresssed the Board on such issues as the Justice Department's case against the School District of Ferndale for the District's alleged segregationist practices in maintaining a school comprised of almost 100% African-American students in a section of the District that was equally segregated. In addition, CBS supported the development of an Open Classroom so that students could study in centers, proceed at their own paces and develop a greater sense of academic independence. A third interest over the years was the creation of a foreign language program for elementary students. Based on the assumption that a second language is learned relatively easily while one is young, the program gained state-wide interest and became a model that several other districts began to follow.
CBS is not allied with any other organization and maintains independence from the administration of the District and from the teachers' union. It is an organization that seeks to inform its members about significant facets of public education in the District and to formulate positions from evidence rather than preconceptions.
